Scott of the Antarctic

Scott walking in the Antarctic

Can you imagine a day like today in the Antarctic??

In 6-minute-English they talk about an exhibition marking the 100th anniversary of Captain Scott's journey to the South Pole.

This week's question:
Which other famous British explorer led the first successful expedition across the Antarctic Circle in 1773? Was it:
a) Captain James Cook
b) Sir Francis Drake
c) Admiral Horatio Nelson

Listen out for the answer at the end of the programme!

Life was really difficult in Scott's base camp because Scott and his team had to face extreme conditions during thier journey. They spent five weeks walking in pitch darkness, and the temperatures they endured were extraordinary. It was hard to even imagine how cold it must get in the Antarctic.

The interesting thing is that this is a story of losers. They reached the South Pole after the Norwegians and they died while trying.

So sometimes when we hear "if at first you don't secceed,..." we have to think about it twice.

I imagine that today it's cold in Antartic. I read on the internet that there are -34º at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. Looking for something more about this topic, I also found a link where you can find a South Pole Live Camera, and some "time lapse Movies". :

The photo shows a huge white space, with a narrow line of foothprints and some little flags. It's amazing to think that today there are people working there, so far from everything. They must wear better clothes than Scott. But nevertheless, in my opinion,to live in the Anthartic today can't be easy...

Teacher I hope you get better.
