Dear NI2 students,
I'd like to take you to the British Cemetery in Madrid in Comandante Fontanes, 7, Urgel metro station. A guide would show us around in British English.
The British Cemetery was founded
in 1854. The aim was to create a place where non-Roman Catholics could be
buried because they were not admitted to other cemeteries existing at the time.
As time went by, non-British nationals were also buried at the Cemetery,
including Lutherans, members of the Greek and Russian Orthodox Churches, and
Jewish people who also needed burial facilities, which were not provided for
under the Spanish Law.
The records and memorials of the
British Cemetery include the founder of the Price Circus, the founder of
‘RestauranteLhardy’, the Brooking family, and many other personalities who have
made their historic contributions to Madrid.
If most of you are interested, we could visit it the last day before the Spring Break, on Wed 20th at 17h. What do you think? Would you like to attend?
