A final feast before Lent

Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, the day many Christians around the world begin a traditional fast before Easter, this year for 46 days. Custom also has it that the days and weeks before Lent be given up to revelry and indulgence -- the great Carnival on the streets of Rio de Janeiro, Mardi Gras in New Orleans, the famous masked balls of Venice and costume parties and parades elsewhere.
In Britain the last day before Lent is celebrated by boisterous crowds dressed in costumes, who race down streets flipping pancakes. Selah Hennessy has more.

Gold rush

Dear NI1 groups,

This is a video from American Hisotry Channel. It is related to chapter number 4 from American Cities. Try to answer these questions:
  • How was success considered differently in California from New England in the East?
  • What were the consequences of gold rush?

Lure: attract
Scramble: (with for) to rush, or struggle with others, to get. The boys scrambled for the ball.
Impoverish: to make poor. The long war severely impoverished the country.

Breakthrough: a sudden solution of a problem leading to further advances, especially in science.

The discovery of the structure of DNA was a major scientific breakthrough.
